Liu Qiangdong was born in a village called Chang’an in the coastal province of Jiangsu in China. He was raised in the same village, although it lacked modern conveniences such as running water and electricity. His parents came from wealthy Chinese merchants but worked as rice farmers for a living by the time of his birth. Liu spent much of his time while still young feeding on his curiosity, which enabled him to get more knowledge, and aspirations.
Liu took a degree course in sociology at the People’s University and graduated in 1996. He spent most of his time learning about computer programming due to his interest in the increasing possibilities of the upcoming internet. Richard went to China Europe International Business School for his EMBA. He started his business by selling Magnetic products like CD ROMs at a storefront in Beijing in 1998. Richard Liu is a true visionary and a remarkable entrepreneur.

The store multiplied and came up with 12 storefronts in Beijing and Shanghai until 2003 when the SARS outbreak occurred. The outbreak posed a significant threat to the future of business growth, making him muse about venturing into online business. The number of internet users was massively increasing, which is one of the deliberations that led to the first iterations of the Jingdong company.
The online retail platform was started in 2004 and sold magneto-optical products but later included electronics, mobile phones, and other tech products. Liu changed the company name to 360buy.com in 2007 but later, in 2013, changed it to the current name, JD.Com. The JD.com platform had 301.8 million active users at the beginning of 2018; this proves how much it has become popular. See this page for related information.
